About the Artwork
Tethered to Earth, Bound to Static is an experimental self-portrait is about how the nature and land that I inhabit, as both a citizen of empire and as a South Asian in diaspora, tie me to my communities and those I am adjacent to, to their knowledge, and to a shared sense of purpose. It is about how systems of oppression increasingly make us both complicit in and targeted by, to varying degrees, their harm.
It is about the shared struggles of artists, across the world and across time, to create, be, and resist amid the systemic violence, surveillance, and oppression that binds us. This work is about me, about my family, about Palestine, and most broadly, about global struggles to maintain ancestral and Indigenous knowledge in the face of colonization.
